Oh, the Foods We Can Cook This Weekend

Good morning!

I've developed a new morning routine this summer and one month in, I am loving it. When I rise, I prepare my coffee and tidy my kitchen. But then I do something different: I head outside to think (weather permitting, of course!).

I think about what I am grateful for and what went well the day before. I check on my little home garden. I breathe and look at the sky and the trees and my backyard. It's a time of quiet contemplation and it sets a nice tone for the rest of my day.

Our garden this year is at home and contained in containers. We have three tomatoes, all grown from seedlings our neighbor dropped off back in May. There are herbs around too — lemon thyme, rosemary, chives and oregano, plus some itty bitty basil that I am hoping will grow. We have a single sweet pepper plant from a plant sale at the local humane society. And then we have our box of peas, which were grown from seed.

This is the simplest garden I've grown in years, and I love it so. I guess that's the theme of this summer really: simplicity. I am simplifying my mornings, my garden and my life, and I feel so much happier for it.

And I'm still cooking all the time. This week I was experimenting with homemade tortillas and picadillo. If I can get both just right, I will share those recipes soon. In the meantime though, let's get onto some recipes that are perfect for this weekend, shall we?

xoxo, Sarah
